Mental and substance use disorders affect millions of Americans. Each September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) to increase awareness of these disorders and celebrate the individuals living in recovery.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Recovery Month efforts to celebrate the millions of Americans who are in recovery from mental and substance use disorders, reminding us that treatment is effective and that people can and do recover. It also serves to help reduce the stigma and misconceptions that cloud public understanding of mental and substance use disorders, potentially discouraging others from seeking help. The 2019 theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger,” emphasizes the need to share resources and build networks of support. It reminds us that mental and substance use disorders affect all of us and that we are all part of the solution.

SAMHSA has created two PSAs to spread this message of collective strength. Post Your Recovery delivers words of encouragement from the recovery community, while Building Recovery shows how support can empower those living in recovery as well as individuals seeking help to achieve their recovery goals. Both are available for television and radio, in English and Spanish, in :20- and :30-second lengths, and in closed and open-ended formats.

There are millions of Americans in recovery sharing hope, help, and support. You can help those still in need of treatment discover the resources available to them by downloading and sharing these uplifting PSAs. We encourage you to share both!

National Recovery Month

Each September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders, and celebrate the individuals living in recovery. Recovery Month is now in its 29th year.  This year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.”  Together, we will explore how integrated care, a strong community, a sense of purpose, and leadership contributes to effective treatments that sustain the recovery of individuals with mental and substance use disorders. The observance will highlight inspiring stories that help thousands of people from all walks of life find the path to hope, health, and wellness. In addition, the materials support SAMHSA’s message that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.

Every year, public service announcements (PSAs) are created for Recovery Month to encourage individuals in need of treatment and recovery services to seek help. To support the 2018 Recovery Month campaign, SAMHSA created two radio and television PSAs in English and Spanish, in :20 and :30 second length. This year’s PSAs, r is for Recovery and Voices for Recovery share the message of hope. Voices for Recovery delivers actual words of encouragement from individuals in recovery to those seeking help.  r is for Recovery helps build and support a community of hope by portraying individuals who are proud of their recovery.

The millions of people in recovery share hope, help and support. But there are many more people who are still in need of treatment and recovery services. You can help by airing these uplifting Public Service Announcements. We encourage you to share both!
